Keep Your Head Down During Your Golf Swing, But Not When Using our Tablet

So did you ditch the cologne, socks or tie gift ideas and buy dad a tablet computer for father’s day?  As more and more tablets are being purchased (Apple sold 11.8 million iPads in the second quarter of 2012, doubling sales from the same period a year ago) it is estimated that worldwide shipments for tablets are estimated to grow to more than 46 million units in 2014 according to International Data Corporation (IDC).

As tablet computers evolve, they are quickly eliminating the need for other mobile devices such as laptops.  So what tasks are being performed on tablets, everything from watching videos, reading books, playing computer games, listening to music and computing.

Unfortunately these technological advances generate a host of many health related injury and illness.  Please take a moment to review this study from Harvard University on iPad & tablet usage:

Poor Neck Posture

Constantly looking down at a screen is quite difficult on the body.  This term is referred to as forward head posture. For every inch your head moves forward, your head gains 10 pounds in weight.  Leaning the head in the forward direction by 2-3 inches means the weight on the neck raises.  This inadequate posture can result in an additional 30-40 pounds on your spine.  So reading, watching a movie, playing angry birds or responding to emails on your tablet can be strenuous to the muscles connected to the occipital bone, eventually giving rise to neck pain at the base of the skull.

Other Health Related Issues
Health professionals feel that when neck is poor placement, vital lung capacity can be reduced by as much as 30%. Your gastrointestinal system can be compromised and the rotation of your head & neck can be troubled. Constant pressure on the upper thoracic vertebra can essentially cause headaches, TMJ and neck pain.

Addressing the needs to provide valuable ergonomic equipment for iPads & other tablets

We are very excited about the iTARM (Articulating iPad & Tablet Arm).    The iTArm conveniently mounts to any desktop and offers a handsfree computing by positioning your iPad/Tablet in the perfect eye level eliminating slouching and all the stress you put on your body while having to look down at your device.  The iTArm works with any tablet or e-book reader that is as small as 5.5” to 10” tall as long as your tablet is at least 5.7” wide.  All three iPads fit perfectly vertically as well as horizontally on the iTArm. The tablet sits firmly in an adjustable cradle that can be tilted in just about any position or angle you wish. The iTArm’s reach is 37.4” long which is ideal if you wish to stand while using the tablet.

Bring the iPad or tablet in a proper viewing level. There are a number of inexpensive iPad stands in the marketplace. There are a few that standout one is called the iPad SpinStand which is a hard plastic shell lined with soft rubber – provides a protective case for your iPad.  Handle/stand snaps on and off – offers more flexibility of use than just a case or just a stand.  Smoothly spins for vertical or horizontal viewing, Anti-slip handhold for a secure hold when in your hand. Hang your iPad from your partition, the back of your car seat, or a hook on the wall for easy viewing of media.  It is lightweight for easy portability.

For use on an airplane, coffee house or college lecture hall classes the iPad Case with Built-in Bluetooth® Keyboard works with all 3 generations of iPads. Featuring a silicone, Spill-Proof and Dust-Proof Bluetooth® Keyboard.  Allows for a modifiable angle viewing with an adjustable stand.  This product is ergonomic; as the tablet will be elevated to a more proper eye viewing level  in a more proper view, and the external keyboard (with its great tactile feel) your hands are more likely to be in a more neutral position.  From an aesthetic prospective it is offered in Red, Pink, White, Black and Brown.
