Give Your Eyes Some Well Deserving Attention

In our continued educational series during National Ergonomic’s Awareness Month, Ms. Devanshi G. Patel discusses an area of the body that is often overlooked.  In this blog she reviews the need to address eye fatigue.  Below please find a passage from her wellness guidelines.  These simple yet effective exercises can be performed quickly & easily at any workstation or home office.

Way too often we find ourselves behind the computer or video screen squinting, rubbing our eyes, or leaning in to try and focus on the characters. It doesn’t need to be that way. There are a few very easy exercises to help fight off eye fatigue or eye strain from being in front of the computer screen for a long period to time.

First and foremost, the way your workstation is set up is extremely important in making sure you are not inadvertently causing eye strain.  Your monitor should be positioned approximately 25-40 inches from the eye to the screen. The top third of the monitor should be 15-20 degrees lower than your horizontal eye level. If your workstation is set up correctly, and you are still experiencing eye strain please consult an ergonomic specialist. If you are trying to prevent eye fatigue you can try the following simple exercises.

1. Repeated blinking – this replenishes the tear film that covers the surface of the eye, lubricating it, and protecting it against dryness, dust particles and other irritants. Blinking every three or four seconds for about a minute is thought to help reduce eye strain by clearing the cornea and allowing the eyes to rest.

2. Palming the eyes. Take your hands and rub them together for 30 seconds or so, until they feel warm. Carefully place over your closed eyes and allow the warmth from your hands to help relieve tension to the eye muscles. Repeat this process 3-5 times. Taking a few deep breaths before performing this exercise will improve relaxation.

3. Rolling your eyes- while this seems too simple to be true, it isn’t. Rolling your eyes, clockwise, counter-clockwise, up and down keeps the accessory muscle of the eyes toned and allow them to assist in focusing the eyes.
