Selecting the Best Monitor Arm for Your LCD Monitor

It is mind-boggling to see how flat panel monitors are constantly evolving. Now that you have chosen the model that has great connectivity & resolution, let’s discuss why it is absolutely necessary to have it connected to a monitor arm.

A monitor arm (aka adjustable arm, flat panel mount) is recommended to replace the standard base supplied with the product. A monitor arm will provide significantly more adjustment to the height, angle, screen rotation and tilt of the monitor. Correct placement is proven to ease and/or reduce health problems including eye strain, neck and back problems. Lifting the monitor off the desktop will increase your work space and it appears less cluttered. For those who are super clean, it removes places for dust to accumulate!

Placement of your LCD monitor or monitors in the healthiest viewing position:

Proper Monitor Position

  • Your monitor(s) placement needs to be centered directly in front of you. You should not have to turn your head significantly. If you are using multiple monitors place your most used screen in the center.
  • The ideal viewing distance is approximately 25″ from your eyes. You can also measure by an arm’s length distance. If you’re struggling to read the screen, use your operating system to increase the font size (do not be vain, at the sake of eye strain).Best Monitor Position
  • The proper height for your monitor places the center of the screen at approximately a 50° angle below eye level. Your head should never have to strain up or down to view the screen comfortably.
  • Tilt the top of your screen slightly away from you.

How to Measure your Monitor:

Measure the Diagonal of the screen (not including the frame around the screen), just the visual screen.

Types of Monitor Arms

Aspects to take into consideration

Will the arm support the weight of the LCD?

  • As monitors are becoming lighter, it is important to review the weight specifications. If the monitor is too light, the arm cannot be adjusted.

Are the arms suitable for your monitor size?

  • If you’re working with two or more monitors, will the arms extended far enough apart to accommodate them?

Can the monitor(s) be exchanged easily?

  • If the monitors need to be moved quickly or often, look for a system with a Quick Release feature.

Is cable management available?

  • Does the monitor arm of an integrated cable management.

What are the mounting patterns?

  • The VESA Plate complies with the standard 75mm and 100mm mounting patterns. Some of the newer models do not have a Vesa mount. For Apple monitors you will need to purchase a special plate thru an Apple provider.

What are the technical specifications?

  • It is important to review Height Adjustment, Arm Extension, Arm Rotation, Monitor Swivel, Monitor Tilt, Folded Depth.
