Back to School Ergo, Inside & Outside of the Classroom
I spent this weekend braving the crowds to by the latest One Direction 3 ring binder for my 11 year old daughter. Thankfully we are ready to start middle school with all of the essentials. I did think about the many kids (from elementary to college) and parents who need to learn about the products that will help to advert potentially painful situations. My intention with this posting is to show simple solutions that will not drain your wallet!
Let’s begin with all of the text books. While there has been a shift towards online textbooks, the majority of institutions still require books. Bringing a backpack to school every day may seem innocent enough, it can cause painful back & neck problems and injuries for students who don’t pack or carry their backpacks properly. An appropriately fitting backpack worn correctly (using both straps equally) can reduce stress by up 80%. Medical professionals instruct that individuals carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight on their backs therefore the listing below can help you guide your child not to overload.
50 lbs. should carry no more than 7.5 lbs.
80 lbs. should carry no more than 12 lbs.
100 lbs. should carry no more than 15 lbs.
130 lbs. should carry no more than 19.5 lbs.
150 lbs. should carry no more than 22.5 lbs.
From Laptops to iPads & Tablets, technology is forever changing the way we learn and work. Unfortunately these devices will cause head and neck flexion. Do these images below portray your child? Please review this very poignant study entitled Oh My Aching Laptop.
It is all about positioning. Ideally we want everyone to use an external keyboard, mouse (wired or wireless) and laptopstand at all times. If this is not in the budget then we highly suggest a laptop stand with a keyboard. Below are a few options that are slim & extremely portable.
We have included a very interesting study by Harvard University which outlines the how head and neck postures vary when using a tablet. At Ergoprise we offer a vast selection of products geared towards iPad usage. Below are a few of our favorites that aid in addressing awkward postures
When space is a premium in a dorm room you can still have a Sit Stand Height Adjustable Desk with compromising style!
The ValueStand – Height Adjustable Laptop Workstation is an ergonomic sit-stand mobile workstation which can be utilized as a freestanding desk. Every dorm room should offer the ability for anyone who wants to sit & stand for any period of time while working or studying. Just roll it when you need it and move it away when you are done.
