I smile when I recall the 1st time entering into the computer lab in college and seeing a Macintosh 128K (now you have an idea of my age) and being absolutely petrified because I had never used a computer. It is hard to image a time when Apple products were not part of our daily lives. That being said; with all of the merchandise available to the Mac community, many individuals are unaware of the ergonomic components available to them.
For this blog I wish to inform Mac consumers about products that will help enhance their current offerings and help address current pain and help prevent future risk of injury.
From iPads to the large 30” Cinema displays, head & neck postures need to be addressed. If the tablet or monitor is located too low or too far away, it forces your neck to constantly tilt downward or neck and chin to lurch forward. Hunching downward to view your screen, you can expect to experience pain in your neck, shoulders or back. A good rule is to have the monitor placed at least an arms’ length distance from you. The screen should be viewed at a rage
15° and 50° below eye level. You should be able to see the entire screen effortlessly without having to force your head up or down.
The iLift™ saves space and allows you to work flexibly and ergonomically. Work while sitting or standing; share your monitor with a visitor; move the screen to avoid glare or to avoid neck and back pain. Simply put the monitor where you want it… no tools or knob-turning required. It’s as intuitive as your Mac! Please note that you will need purchase a specific vesa adaptor kit from Apple. This monitor arm model 7517-1000 holds weights from 7 lbs.-27 lbs. and model 7517-1500 holds weights from 13.5 lbs. – 44 lbs. It includes FLEXmount™ with 6 mounting options, including desk clamp and thru-desk and wall mounting. Monitor arm has 200 degrees of monitor tilt. The cable management keeps the work surface free of annoying cable clutter. It provides additional security since it removes the danger of the Monitor of tipping over or slipping off the desk.
The all new iTArm (iPad & Tablet Arm) is the answer to the biggest issue with the iPads & tablets; they’re horribly non- ergonomic, or for you folks that don’t like to use the word “ergonomic” it’s incredibly uncomfortable to use either for extended periods of time. iTArm conveniently mounts to any desktop and offers an handsfree computing by positioning your iPad/Tablet in the perfect eye level eliminating slouching and all the stress you put on your body while having to look down at your device. The iTArm works with any tablet or e-book reader that is as small as 5.5” to 10” tall as long as your tablet is at least 5.7” wide. All three iPads fit perfectly vertically as well as horizontally on the iTArm. The tablet sits firmly in an adjustable cradle that can be tilted in just about any position or angle you wish. The iTArm’s reach is 37.4” long which is ideal if you wish to stand while using the tablet. This is without question a must for every serious iPad or Tablet enthusiast or any company that is concerned about the heath and productivity of their employees that use an iPad or Tablet for any extended period of time.
As notebooks are becoming lighter, so have the issues of the size and tactile feel of the keys. Northwest Missouri University introduced a very interesting study entitled “Oh My Aching Laptop”, which helps to address the health hazards for of laptop usage. With the size of most current laptops there is a disproportion between your shoulder width and the width of the keyboard when your fingers are placed on the home row of keys. To offset for this position, people bend their wrists to create a 90 degree angle between the home row keys and their hands. This term is referred to as ulnar deviation. This constricts the blood flow through your wrist and this posture also requires sustained muscle tension which further reduces blood flow to the muscles. The median nerve runs through the carpal tunnel in your wrist, ulnar deviation reduces the size of this tunnel and pressure on this nerve causes carpal tunnel syndrome. Ideally your hands should be in alignment with your forearm, so that a straight line can be drawn through the center of your forearm, your wrist, and through your third (middle) finger, with no bend at the wrist. Your hands should float over the keys (a similar position to playing the piano). We are huge proponents of utilizing a separate keyboard with a laptop and are happy to state the following Mac compatible keyboards are a wonderful pair to the New MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
The Goldtouch line offers a unique approach to Mac compatible keyboard design (please note that these are adaptations and some individuals may not like the key placement compared to the traditional mac keyboard layout).
It is allows the keyboard to be positioned to the users. Simply move the handle outward to allow for the keyboard to horizontally tent and or vertically the splay. To those who are doubtful about using an adjustable keyboard, you can keep it completely flat as a traditional keyboard and slowly modify it to your appropriate location.
The NEW Goldtouch V2 Mac Compatible Adjustable Keyboard GTU-0088 is a perfect addition for the workstation. The soft key touch, low activation force and full key travel distance provides keying comfort and reduces risk from “bottoming out” when typing. The compact size allows for use in limited space environments, and reduces shoulder abduction when reaching for mice and other peripherals. The keyboard has enhanced hot keys that do not require additional driver installation.
The Goldtouch GO is offered in both and a wired and now a Bluetooth Wireless version. The keyboard offers all the functionality of the standard Goldtouch keyboard but is compact and portable as it weighs less than 1 lbs. There are covers that protect the keys when placed in a laptop case. The keyboard is small enough to be placed on top of the existing laptop keyboard.
Now I may offend several individuals with my next statement. I am not a fan of the mice that are produced by Apple. While they are small & contemporary, they place the hand & wrist in an awkward and dangerous position. We recommend the following.
The Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 Series (Right, Left, Right Small & Right Wireless) is a wonderful mouse that has a uniquely patented contoured design which converts the traditional palm down mousing position to a vertical handshake position. It is extremely comfortable. This iteration includs a larger flange along the bottom of the mouse to prevent the pinky finger from dragging on the desk. The thumb rest has been improved to provide even more comfort and reduced grip force. It offers an easier-to-access pointer speed control button on the side of the mouse allowing the user to select between Extra Low, Low, Medium and High, giving users the ability to select the degree of precision they require for each task. An additional thumb button can also be assigned once a driver is installed. The current Mac compatible mouse has fixed button functions without a driver. Shareware drivers listed on the Evoluent website may be used to program the buttons.
The manufacturer will be producing a MAC only version which is currently scheduled to be released sometime late Q4 which we are really excited to offer once it becomes available.
